Few figures illustrate this tension more clearly than Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, whose influence on twentieth-century fashion transformed women’s clothing and helped redefine ideas of elegance, simplicity and modern style.
Chanel’s legacy, however, extends beyond fashion.
Her life during the German occupation of France in the Second World War has become the subject of considerable historical scrutiny. Hal Vaughan’s 2011 book Sleeping with the Enemy: Coco Chanel’s Secret War brought renewed public attention to archival material concerning Chanel’s relationships with German officials and allegations of involvement with German intelligence. The publisher describes Vaughan’s work as documenting Chanel’s role as German intelligence operative Abwehr agent F-7124 and her involvement in wartime missions.
