Il-Vitorja – 8 September: Three Victories, One Date, One Nation By Mary Lourdes Bonnici MBA Introduction Every year on 8 September , Malta pauses to commemorate one of the most significant dates in its national calendar: Jum il-Vitorja — Victory Day. Few dates in Maltese history carry so many layers of meaning. The 8th of September is associated with moments of conflict and survival, but also with faith, tradition, remembrance and national identity. It recalls major events separated by centuries, yet united by one remarkable date. It is also the religious feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary — Maria Bambina , celebrated with particular devotion in several Maltese and Gozitan communities. For this reason, Il-Vitorja is much more than another public holiday. It is a day that tells part of the story of Malta itself. The Great Siege of 1565 The first great historical event connected with 8 September is the Great Siege of Malta of 1565. For months, the Ottoman forces attempted t...

When Fear Goes Viral: Natural Disasters, Social Media and the Importance of Critical Thinking By Mary Lourdes Bonnici MBA Introduction: Why I Decided to Write This Article I want to teach, inform and encourage people to think carefully before allowing fear to take control. After carrying out a great deal of research, I decided to write this blog about a topic that is becoming increasingly visible on social media. Every day, people around the world encounter dramatic videos of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, storms, tsunamis, unusual skies, auroras, landslides and other natural events. Within minutes, footage from different countries can be placed together in one video accompanied by alarming music and headlines such as: “Something is happening to the Earth.” “Everything is happening at the same time.” “Scientists cannot explain this.” “The signs are everywhere.” Some of the events shown in these posts are completely genuine. Natural disasters are real. People lose their ...

Why Lifelong Learning Matters for Personal and Professional Growth By Mary Lourdes Bonnici Introduction Lifelong learning is the continuous development of knowledge, skills and understanding throughout life. In a world where industries, technology and workplace expectations change rapidly, learning should not end with formal education. Continuous learning helps individuals remain adaptable, confident and prepared for new opportunities. It also supports personal growth, professional development and stronger decision-making. What Lifelong Learning Means Lifelong learning includes both formal and informal learning. It may involve professional courses, reading, online learning, mentoring, workplace experience, research, reflection or developing a new skill. The goal is not simply to collect qualifications. It is to remain curious, improve continuously and apply new knowledge in meaningful ways. Why Continuous Learning Matters Knowledge and skills can quickly become outdated. Professionals ...

Tessie Camilleri: The Woman Who Opened the Door to University Education in Malta By Mary Lourdes Bonnici Introduction History is often shaped not only by dramatic public events, but also by individuals who quietly cross boundaries that previous generations had been unable to cross. In Malta’s educational history, Tessie Camilleri holds such a place. In 1919, Camilleri and Blanche Huber became the first two women admitted to undergraduate degree studies at the University of Malta . Three years later, on 2 May 1922 , Tessie Camilleri graduated with a Bachelor of Literature (B.Litt.) , becoming the first female graduate of the University of Malta . ( L-UniversitΓ  ta' Malta ) Her achievement represented far more than an individual academic success. At a time when university education for women in Malta was only beginning to become a genuine possibility, her graduation demonstrated that women could participate successfully in the highest levels of academic life. Who Was Tessie Camiller...
